Our Menu Plan: April 14th to 20th

Tomorrow is going to be a busy night for us - we have our simplest meal planned that Ed will make while I'm away.  When you're parenting single handed, a simple evening meal is essential, don't you agree?

The reason we're so busy is that I'm teaching that evening at a local food event.  I'm excited to talk about one of my favourite topics: Cooking with Kids!   I'm a little nervous.  Not about the speaking so much, I do it often.  I'm worried that I'm going to speak a kilometre a minute (- isn't that what we Canadians should say?).  The reason: I have so much to share and only a half hour to do it in!  I'll try and do the topic justice in such a short time.

I strongly believe it's important that we give our kids skills in the kitchen and show them that cooking can be fun.  I'll be back here on the blog later this week to share some of our tips and tricks for cooking with kids (without losing your cool)!

I'm trying a new recipe!  I'll adapt it like crazy to fit our tastes and make it a wee bit less salty/cheesy (my son hates melted cheese - the little weirdo.)  I'm starting with this basic recipe:


Roasted Pork Tenderloin (recipe coming soon!), Broccoli with 5 Minute Bread.

What's your favourite thing to cook with your kids?


  1. ... the little weirdo! hilarious! my son doesn't like cheese either and we think the same thing about him.
    However, my fella only likes it melted as in a grilled cheese (real cheddar rather than slices though), pizza and lasagna and my homemade version of homemade hamburger helper. But I don't put cheese on top of our meatloaf anymore b/c even melted, he doesn't like it on meatloaf, burgers or philly cheesesteak. I don't think he's related to any of the rest of us.

    1. It is pretty bonkers - our guy used to like melted cheese, grilled cheese and cheese on pizza. He'll still eat cheese on pizza at school pizza days. Around here? Not so much. Parenting!

  2. Do you guys take the weather forecast into consideration when you are planning your meals for the week? ie schedule BBQ-ables on nice days and oven meals on rainy days.

    1. Yes and No.

      On a week like this where it should be reasonably warmish (10C qualifies for that in Canada), we might put a BBQ meal on the menu. If it rains, like the forecast calls for, I'll still go out and fire up the grill - dashing in and out every few minutes to flip burgers or whatever. We may also have a BBQ meal on the plan and then bump it ahead or back in the week if the weather really doesn't cooperate.

      Like how a simple question elicited a full paragraph answer?
