I don’t know about you, but I never realized you could make your own window clings!
I thought they were made with exclusive technology only found in Roswell, New Mexico (or possibly Area 51).
- Surely only alien beings held the secret to how these wondrous plastic creations could stick without being sticky!
- Could a mere human family create such a marvel?
- Could such works of art be made on a frugal budget?
Why, yes! My good friend Lynette showed me, and the Mennonite mothers we work with, how to make these awesome little snowflakes. I knew this simple craft needed to be shared.
Gotta love a craft that is easy for kids to do AND isn’t kinda crappy looking.
Here’s how….
Materials to Make Your Own Window Clings:
- Dimensional (Puffy) Fabric Paint.
- This type was our favourite – so pretty in the light!
- Waxed paper
- Low-tack Painters Tape
- Colouring pages of your choice (see below)
What to look for in the shape/style of the coloring page for DIY window clings:
- Simple is best – especially for little crafters.
- Smaller is best – you may be tempted to do a full page image – remember – these need to stick vertically – if it’s too large it will be too heavy to hold up. We found 4 to 6 inches to work well, but we didn’t experiment much bigger than that. (Let me know if you do!)
- Make sure all the parts of the shape join each other – otherwise it will just be many pieces vs. one tidy shape.
The hardest part of this craft is waiting for it to dry!

How-to Make Your Own Window Clings – it couldn’t be simpler!
- Print off your colouring pages. (See below for tips.)
- Position a piece of waxed paper over the image. Hold in place with a piece of low-tack painters tape.
- Outline the image with the dimensional fabric paint. Fill in the image, if you want to.
- Let dry, usually overnight. (The colours will look muted when wet – don’t worry – they’ll perk up!)
- You’re done! Stick your craft on the window. (A little moisture on the window may help if it doesn’t seem to stay.)
Window Clings don’t have to be snowflakes, of course! The only limit is your imagination.
